Stitching & Non Crimp Fabric (NCF)

Cathay’s multiaxial (NCF) technologies integrates advanced fibre spreading techniques, high conversion speed, adjustable laying heads and has the capability to manufacture fabrics at variable widths. Multi-axial fabrics comprise of one or more layers of fibres with varying orientation that are stitched together with a lightweight thread. This technology offers zero crimp for maximised mechanical performance. Styles available are Uni-directional, Double Bias, Biaxial, Triaxial, and Quadriaxial fabrics. Typical applications include automotive components, aerospace structures and marine vessels. Multi-axial fabrics can be made in custom widths from 100 mm to 1270 mm. Weight per layer ranges are from 75 gsm to 600 gsm. Multi-Axial Fabrics have a lower susceptibility to fibre buckling, which is favourable to exert mechanical properties directly to the fibres. Material efficiency through design, though the ability to orientate the fibres where strength is needed the most. As the fabrics are non crimp this minimises resin pooling ensuring a higher fibre to rein content, or Fibre Volume Fraction Vf, which enhances composite mechanical properties compared to woven fabrics.

UNIDIRECTIONAL (0°,90°)

Cathay Composites Unidirectional NCF aligns the fibre in 0° or 90° axis and these fibres are held together by lightweight, non structural stitching.

BIAXIAL 0° / 90°

Biaxial fabric consists of two layers stitched together, with their fiber strands lying at +/- 45 degrees to the edges (instead of along the roll and across at 90 degrees, as with plain weave fiberglass fabrics)

DOUBLE BIAS (+45°, -45°)

This stitching is known as a double bias +45°/-45°. What that means is that the fibres are rotated on a 45° angle from vertical and horizontal.

TRIAXIAL (0°/90°, +45°, -45°)

Triaxial fabrics are composed of three sets of parallel yarns corresponding to three directions: 0°, -60° and +60 °. Their structure is triangular.

QUADRAXIAL (0°,90°,+45°,-45°)

This four (4) layer fabric has carbon fibre laid down parallel in the 0º, -45°, +45° and 90º axes. Lightweight stitching holds these fibres together and parallel in each layer.
